Segno liquido

Segno liquido, liquid sign, is my thesis project for the bachelor degree at Accademia di Belle Arti di Palermo. The best way to explain the subject of my research is starting from the title: “Sign”, from the greek etymological origin of the word “graphic” that is “graphos”, which meant “writing” “drawing” but also scratching or marking something to leave a sign. It is also a reference to the atavistic need of humans to leave a sing that will be read from someone else, our need to comunicate. “Liquid” because i wanted to look at the ways graphics have evolved through the years, adapting the counterculture’s message to different new media, just like a liquid adapts its shape to the container. It’s a research on the graphic production of underground cultures in the last century, focusing on the evolutions from paper to pixels. It talks about 80’s punk’s fanzines and 90’s cyberpunk fanzines, hippies posters, rave flyers, subvertising and memes, investigating on how protest graphics take place in the web culture. In the last chapter i also took a look at the latest technologies, like augmented reality or virtual reality, to try to speculate on what the new media will be. I wanted this book to be a multi-media experience so, among the various images, there are many QR codes that link videos, songs or web pages. Every chapter starts with an illustrated page that, through the Artivive app (avaliable for android and apple devices) can be viewed in an animated that anticipates the content of the chapter. Also, the liquid-like pattern at the edge of the pages moves from page to page and its movement can be seen by flipping the pages, just like a flipbook animation. But what about the liquid cat in the cover of the book? The idea came from the research that won the 2017’s IgNobel prize for physics demonstrating that, because of their ability to fit into every container, cats are both solid and liquid. Cats are also the undisputed favourite animal of the internet culture so i thought it would be the perfect mascotte for this research.
